| Johnny Yong Bosch - Anime Convention
Personality of the Week - July 14, 2002 |
When
Yasuhiro Nightow created his retro-future sci-fi-western Trigun manga,
he never could have imagined that it would become a fan favorite in Japan
and North America. And even less likely was the chance of the hero of the
animated Trigun, Vash the Stampede, having Johnny Yong Bosch as his English-language
voice. Bosch would be the first to tell you that. In the last few years,
Bosch was mostly interested in martial arts and TV roles such as his part
in the middle of the hot run of Mighty Morphin' Power Rangers. But fate
turned his way when an agent suggest he try out for a role in a Pioneer-sponsored
dub of Trigun. Bosch's "hero voice" got him the Vash role, which has evolved
into a a cult favorite, obvious to those who go to anime conventions and
see the Vash costumers. "I just take it as it is, and that's cool," Bosch
said about the Vash role, which was his first experience at dubbing. "It
was tough. The first couple of episodes he did a lot of screaming and high
pitched voices, and he was crazy. I didn't really prepare actually, I just
went in to the booth." |
