Josh Phillips -
Anime
Convention Personality of the Week - July 22, 2007
The
name of "Josh Phillips" is nearly as common as "John Smith." You'll
find artists. musicians, athletes and businessmen with the same name.
However, only one Josh Phillips was the English-language voice of the
wild, punky Jan Valentine in the dubs of the Hellsing anime. This
Phillips had gotten a few on-camera roles and had several parts in
other dubs, including I My Me Strawberry Eggs, handled by the same
company that produced the Hellsing dub. In both animated versions of
Hellsing, Phillips' role isn't a long one (and he faces the same fate
in each version), but he gets absolutely everything he can get out of
each line. Phillips' wild intensity in his first Hellsing appearance
led the dub's producers to bring him back for the second series, where
he came up with the same sort of wisecracking, mean-spirited,
disrespectful performance that he delivered in the first series.
Phillips was such a convincing low-life punk in Hellsing that fans at
Anime Expo may have been surprised to find that he didn't have a face
full of piercings, and looked like an ordinary guy.
