Jennifer Sekiguchi - Anime Convention Personality of the Week - July 23, 2006
Voicing
Mamimi in the dub of FLCL should have been a big breakout role for
Jennifer Sekiguchi. Her portrayal of the cynical-yet-cute schoolgirl
was one of the highlights in the bizarre Gainax show. While Jennifer
stayed busy in the following years, writing scripts and getting more
dub acting jobs, she didn't get the biggest roles until 2006 rolled
around and she was cast as three major characters: Eureka in Eureka
Seven, Himeko in Kannazuki no Miko and Wendy in Gun Sword. That last
role comes in an adventure series that reminds her of Cowboy Bebop.
"It's not just looking cool or cute. When I look at the pictures,
there's something behind the eyes and the expressions that gives it
history - like it's a real person." Ironically, in both Gun Sword and
Kannazuki no Miko, the other female lead to Sekiguchi's roles is
Michelle Ruff, who was the memorable Chii in the Chobits dub. When the
Gun Sword cast met fans at Anime Expo, Ruff went out of her way to
praise Sekiguchi's acting ability. That talent has led to another break
for Sekiguchi, where she gets to start directing dubs as well as acting
in them.
