Clamp - Anime Convention Personalities of the Week - August 20, 2006
Among
manga fans, two names surfaced when they discussed dream guests of
honor at North American fandom conventions. One was the reclusive
artist Masamune Shirow, and the other was the four-artist collective
Clamp. Neither was considered to be the kind of artist to ever cross
the Pacific and appear before American fans...until Clamp were
announced as guests at Anime Expo in 2006. That announcement generated
a wave of enthusiasm rarely seen among fans; many said they traveled to
Anaheim just to see the quartet responsible for Card Captor Sakura,
Chobits, XXXholic, Battle Doll Angelic Layer, RG Veda, Tokyo Babylon,
Miyuki-chan in Wonderland, Magic Knight Rayearth and Tsubasa Reservoir
Chronicles. Their appearance at Anime Expo attracted so many fans that
it overwhelmed one of the nation's largest convention centers and
filled one of that center's largest rooms. The luckiest people in
Anaheim that weekend were the few who won a chance for autographs from
the group.
