| Tatsuo Sato - Anime Convention
Personality of the Week - Sept. 1, 2002 |
Martian
Successor Nadesico may be one of the most subversive and thought-provoking
animated productions of the 1990's. North American anime fans tend to treat
it as a comedy because of the occasional humor and the delightfully wry
Ruri, but there are some serious things going on. Characters die, battles
are won and lost, and viewers are left wondering what really is going on.
Tatsuo Sato held together the whole project from the director's desk. His
idea of Nadesico as a drama with comedy is befitting of a person
who nearly chose a different calling. "In school I was studying political
science, but that's when I discovered studying wasn't fun," said Sato to
fans at Otakon in 2002. "I decided to make my own movies, and I found that
anime was the medium that let me express myself the most." He's been responsible
for major parts of other fan favorites - storyboards for Child's Toy,
the script for Kare Kano. And Sato was scheduled to be the director
for a project that seems destined to become a fan favorite, a television
series version of Ninja Scroll. Sato's encounters with U.S. fans
at Otakon was a good way to prepare for a project that was intended for
the American fans who became big supporters of the original Ninja Scroll
series. |
