Many artists design memorable characters. Yoshiyuki Sadamoto created a group of obsessions when he sat down to draw the characters for Neon Genesis Evangelion. Sadamoto already had created the characters for Wings of Honneasmise-Royal Space Force, creating a realistic group of drawings for one of the most emotionally realistic anime movies ever made. His Nadia of the Mysterious Seas characters were among the most popular among the second wave of North American anime fandom, and 21st century fans have embraced his .hack//Sign characters. The Cartoon Network generation is still trying to come to grips with his FLCL designs. But the Evangelion characters captured fans imaginations like few others. His gloomy 14-year-old girl who pilots a giant robot became Rei Ayanami, whose face defined beauty for a generation of anime fans who were used to only lightweight cuties. His aggressive, pushy Soryu Asuka Langley inspired females everywhere who wished they could be the same in public. The artist was given only a few guidelines when he created the characters for Neon Genesis Evangelion, but Sadamoto did his work so well that the producers of the planned live-action Evangelion film are going to have a remarkably difficult job finding real people who can live up to his drawings.
