The Captains -
Anime
Convention Personalities of the Week - October 7, 2007
Japanese rock groups offer a
fresh new sound to American fans. The Captains
offer a fresh old sound
of sorts. Guitarists Kizuhiko and Hizashi, bassist Ted and drummer
Yosuke aim at the 1960's British rock sound that reached Japan around
the same time it invaded the United States. Groups such as Herman's
Hermits and the Dave Clark Five rivaled the Beatles for popularity in
those days, and their tunes were called "group sounds" in Japan. The
Captains aim to resurrect that music for a generation whose parents
may
not have been born when the original music was made. Ironically, with
their military band uniforms, The Captains look like the 1960's U.S.
band Paul Revere and the Raiders. The Toshiba EMI group made an
ambitious invasion of America in September of 2007, starting their tour
in New York, heading to Nashville and then joining up with Peelander-Z
and The Emeralds for a swing through Georgia that included a stop at
Anime Weekend Atlanta. Fans at the Georgia convention still can't
believe what they saw and heard. The roses are part of the act and give
the band that feel of the male Utena characters - but that's part of
their goal to become the ultimate anime band.
