Walter Amos - Anime Convention Personality of the Week - Oct. 25, 1999 Would you really
want to be an anime villain, the guys who always lose, who always get their
heads handed to them as massive explosions rock their secret bases? It
probably depends on how cool the villains look (there's one cosplay group
that always dresses as Big Fire from Giant Robo). The best-dressed villains
in anime are probably found in the old Legend of Galactic Heroes series,
and the second-best dressed villains are in the even older Space Cruiser
Yamato/Star Blazers series. That's probably why Walter Amos is a fan of
both series. During the day at conventions, he hangs around the members
of the Star Blazers voice cast. At night, Amos retreats to his closet of
costumes and emerges as one of the imperial leaders from Galactic Heroes.
Those who were on hand for the Anime Weekend Atlanta masquerade in 1998
will never forget his stirring recruiting speech for the empire, and his
profound promise that "Our planets do not blow up!" |
