Convention Personality of the Week - October 28, 2007
The quiet and attractive
costumer at the artists' alley table has a vivid imagination and an
unique way of looking at the world. Jen Lee Quick is one of the many
artists discovered by TokyoPop and given a chance to have her material
published. Her "Off*Beat" series looks at the lives of two teenagers,
males who may or may not have a relationship going one day. In creating
the story of Tory and Colin, Quick's imagination shines when she lets
her readers dive into Tory's dreams and look at what it's like to be a
21st-century teenager. Quick shows a special empathy for her characters
and a clear knowledge of what people are really like, something that
attracts readers to her series. She pays so much attention to her
characters that she even has birth dates and horoscopes for them. In
turn, her fans can keep track of Quick online through Deviant Art
and a Live
Journal community where they can guess what will happen between
Tory and Colin. Fans of "Off*Beat" have grown to enjoy the characters,
but they'll have to wait a while to learn about their next adventures
since the series' third volume is not expected to be published until
2008.
