Crispin Freeman - Anime Convention Personality of the Week - Nov. 1, 1999 If fans are looking
for an example of how they drive American companies to release their favorite
anime series, they need look no further than Irresponsible Captain Tyler.
This cult favorite, about the story of a spaceship captain who turns incompetence
and laziness into a sort of Zen anti-triumph, produced what looked to be
the signature role for actor Crispin Freeman. It seemed that Tyler was
the role of Freeman's young lifetime and nothing else in his career could
match it...until he took on a side job handling script adaptations for
the English-language version of a Japanese TV series based on a video game.
Something about "Pocket Monsters." Now, Pikachu strides the world in seven-league
boots, Pokemon is a billion-dollar entertainment engine, and Freeman's
name is in the credits for the hottest show in American television. |
