Lou Albano - Anime Convention Personality of the Week - November 26, 2006
For
most 21st-century anime fans, Capt. Lou Albano is as old as
black-and-white television and phonograph records, both of which were
state of the art when he started his pro wrestling career. Many of
today's fans had not been born when Albano made his first national
splash with a double-barreled cable TV attack, through his appearances
on the first national shows of the former World Wrestling Federation
and his role in the Cyndi Lauper music video "Girls Just Want to Have
Fun." A few years after that video, Albano got his break in the world
that anime convention fans would recognize, when he was cast as Mario
in the Mario Bros. cartoon show that aired on Saturday morning
TV. That show stuck in the minds of the people who run the Youmacon
convention, and they arranged for the 73-year-old Albano to be their
guest of honor. Unusual, but it worked, as Albano spent the weekend
talking about the time he appeared with Danny DiVito in "Wise Guys."
